The Wellness Community-Greater Boston to Offer Cancer Support Group for School Age Children

Program helps young kids to better understand Issues around cancer

Newton, MA – February 12, 2007 – The Wellness Community–Greater Boston (TWC) today announced a new program called “Kids Count too!” which is targeted at children ages four through 12 years old to help them better understand the issues related to cancer. The sessions will take place at TWC’s Newton facility on the second Saturday of each month from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

“Kids Count Too!” works with parents and their children to help them speak openly about cancer and seeks to discourage feelings of isolation that an illness can bring to a family. Through developmentally appropriate activities, kids have the opportunity to meet other children who are going through the same situation in a safe, supportive environment.

We find that there is a need to break down the cultural norms that tell parents not to talk to their children about cancer,” said The Wellness Community’s Associate Program Director, Susan Englander LICSW. “People tend to forget that cancer does not affect just one person. Kids are like sponges and are often affected by the illness even if a parent is not symptomatic.
