Ongoing Programs
Newcomers Orientation (NEWTON/HANOVER/SALEM) If you are new to The Wellness Community, we request that you attend a Newcomers Orientation Meeting. Adults
with cancer, family member and friends are invited to join us for a one-hour overview of the programs and services offered
free of charge. These meetings are typically led by a cancer survivor. NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY. * Newton—Meetings are held twice weekly: Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. * Hanover—Tuesdays
at 10:30 a.m. * Salem—Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m.
Weekly Support Groups (NEWTON/HANOVER/SALEM) Ongoing groups for people with cancer and/or primary caregivers are the heart of our program. In Participant Groups,
people with cancer offer support to one another, explore new ways of dealing with the stresses of cancer and learn techniques
to become partners with their health care team. In Family/Caregiver Groups, people explore ways of supporting loved ones in

Cancer Support (ROXBURY) This is a drop-in support group.
Advanced Registration is NOT required. Cancer Support—Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m.
Individual and Couples Counseling (NEWTON) The Wellness Community offers individual and
couples counseling sessions to participants and their loved ones dealing with issues related to their cancer experience. For
appointments, please attend a Newcomers Orientation meeting or call (617) 332-1919.
Families Facing Cancer Together, Planning the Journey (NEWTON) The Wellness Community offers families facing
a new diagnosis of cancer the opportunity to come together with a TWC facilitator or intern to consider how they will manage
finding the support needed for the everyday tasks of life as well as for the emotional challenges ahead. Please call (617)

Networking Groups Networking groups meet
monthly or bi-monthly and are diagnosis and/or situation specific. These drop-in groups offer people an opportunity to share
common feelings and concerns relevant to their situation. Due to occasional changes, always check the calendar or call to
confirm the dates. All networking groups and on a drop-in basis, RSVP is not required.
Networking
groups are only open to individuals with cancer, with the exception of the Multiple Myeloma Group (NEWTON) which welcomes
caregivers. The Survivors Networking Group is for those who have completed cancer treatment and would like to continue sharing
support with others who are moving beyond cancer. Breast Cancer Networking

you the basics of strength training and how to adapt a program to your special needs. Classes are led by Mary Kennedy, BS,
ACSM, HFI at The Wellness Community, 1039 Chestnut Street, Newton.
Mind-Body Programs (NEWTON) Through appropriate exercise and mind-body techniques, the immune system can be
strengthened and quality of life improved. We offer meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Lebed, and Line Dancing classes designed
to strengthen the body, mind and spirit. Please check the calendar for dates and times.
Lebed (NEWTON) Wednesdays, 5:030-6:30 p.m. Join Julie Kaufman, certified Lebed Method instructor, for this
fun and therapeutic program. The Lebed Method is aimed at helping people heal and thrive physically and emotionally by combining
physical therapy practices with gentle movement, music, information, education, and positive feedback. Appropriate for all!
Qi Gong/Tai Chi (NEWTON) Tuesdays, 4:00/5:15 p.m.
Qi Gong/Tai Chi (HANOVER) Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m. Join Peggy Leung, certified AAAI Tai Chi and yoga instructor for this ancient Chinese exercise that
incorporates the mind, body, and spirit. In this program you will learn stretching, balancing, massage, relaxation, and meditation
techniques.
Prepare for Surgery/Chemo/Radiation
(HANOVER) Fourth Tuesday of every month, 1:30-3:00 p.m. This program is based on Peggy Huddleston’s program
which encompasses physical and emotional preparation for surgery, chemo and/or radiation. Participants (remove ‘ in
participants) are guided in this process and will take home a prerecorded relaxation tape to use before, during and after
medical interventions. If you are facing surgery, chemo and/or radiation, individual counseling is available upon request.

Join Miriam Price-Eubanks for an experience that stimulates the mind, strengthens the body, and calms the spirit. Participants
will learn a series of postures, exercises and breathing techniques that will help improve concentration, strengthen the immune
system and manage stress.

Nurturing Your Spirits (SALEM) Tuesdays, 11:00 a.m. –
12:30 p.m. In this program we will explore what is of ultimate meaning to us, what helps us cope and what provides us with
strength and hope. This program is led by Reverend Susan Moran, Unitarian Universalist Minister and Chaplain.
Yoga of the Heart (SALEM) Tuesdays, 4:30-5:30 p.m. This workshop combines a slower paced
yoga practice, deep relaxation, visualization techniques, breath work, and meditation. Facilitated by certified Reiki &
Yoga of the Mind instructor, Lillian Reilly, RN.
Lebed (SALEM) First
Tuesday of each month, 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Reiki & Meditation (SALEM) Third Wednesday of every month, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Join certified Reiki and Yoga
of the Mind instructor, Lillian Reilly, RN and experience the healing qualities of meditation, visualization and relaxation.
| EXPRESSION AND EXPLORATION |
Art Exploration (HANOVER) Thursdays, 10:00-11:00 a.m. This weekly program examines a variety of writing and artistic projects focused
toward strengthening each individual’s spirit and sense of self as part of the healing process. This program is led
by professional illustrator, author and educator, Christine Sykes.
Journaling For Wellness (HANOVER) Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. Journaling provides a safe and creative outlet to express the many thoughts and feelings
experience on the cancer journey. Join us as we come together to explore the benefits of this valuable tool.
Writing for Wellness (NEWTON) Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This weekly writing
program, facilitated by Claire Willis, LICSW, is based on the therapeutic benefits of writing. This class is for people dealing
with a cancer diagnosis. No writing experience is required.
Drawing and the Art of
Seeing (NEWTON) Please RSVP, click here. Tuesdays, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Join TWC participant and artist Jack Klugerman to learn the art of
seeing and develop a tool to express yourself anywhere with just a pencil and paper! No experience necessary.
Expressive Writing (ROXBURY) First
and Third Thursday of each month, 12:30-1:30 p.m. This program provides
an opportunity for participants to put their thoughts and feelings into words in a non-judgmental atmosphere. No experience
necessary! Led by writer and instructor Marjorie Hicks.
Painting with Evmorphia
(NEWTON) Every other Friday, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Join artist and instructor
Evmorphia Stratis in a painting class designed to help you explore and expand your artistic side! Using a variety of
media, students will learn composition, perspective and color theory through still life, portraiture and landscape painting.
Using non-traditional methods, students will explore their fantasies, memories and dreams through painting. All levels
invited. No experience necessary.
Nutrition Education (NEWTON) Join Sheila Wolfson, MEd,
CNS, LDN and learn about nutritious food that is good for the mind, body and soul. You are encouraged to bring
questions. Workshops are held twice a month. For dates and times, please refer to the calendar. Topics inclkude: Nutrition
